LAWRENCEBURG, Ky (LEX 18) A construction project brought one part of Anderson County to a halt Wednesday morning when crews hit a gas line causing a leak.

It happened on the 127 bypass at Broadway Street in Lawrenceburg behind the West Park Shopping Plaza. A crew was digging to make space for a new electric pole when the Maintenance Supervisor for the City says the crew hit a gas line.

Supervisor Noal Cotton tells LEX 18 that he was in the American Legion Park going through his daily checks of the area and he heard a loud pop when the line was hit.

He said that the smell quickly filled the area and first responders evacuated the park.

"There wasn’t a whole lot of people here at that time, fortunately, so it wasn’t a big commotion or anything. We were able to get everybody out of here pretty quickly," Cotton told LEX 18.

The Atmos Gas Company shut off the line and officials were able to lift the evacuation shortly before noon.

"No body hurt, that’s the main thing. Everybody’s safe," he said.

The evacuation only lasted an hour.
