LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Police on Wednesday arrested a mother and grandmother after a toddler wearing only a diaper was found wandering in a roadway.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office says a passerby called police just after 7 a.m. to report seeing 2 1/2-year-old boy wandering alone on Piney Hill Road.

Deputies took the child to St. Joseph Hospital London, where they discovered "that the child had several large bruises on his legs, chest and torso."

"Through investigation deputies learned that the child had been struck with a belt by the mother and grandmother," a sheriff’s news release says.

Authorities charged 24-year-old Angelica C. Mason of Corbin with first-degree criminal abuse, and 45-year-old Bobbi F. Cross of Corbin with first-degree wanton endangerment.

Both women were being held in the Laurel County Detention Center.
