LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – As temperatures climbed past 90 degrees in central Kentucky, the Compassionate Caravan hit the streets to make sure the homeless are safe.

The Catholic Action Center program checks on people who are out on the streets during extreme weather.

Sunday afternoon they brought folks water, snacks and sunscreen. Organizers say heat exhaustion and heat stroke are big concerns for the homeless when the temperatures are this high. They welcome anyone who needs a break from the heat to come inside the shelter for the day.

LexTran is also offering free rides to area cooling centers as the city has activated their Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention weather plan, which will continue through Monday.
