LAWRENCEBURG, In. (WLWT) – Hundreds of runners raced through downtown Lawrenceburg inspired by the strong and fighting spirit of Lauren Hill.
As WLWT reports, it’s been three years since No. 22 passed away, losing her battle against brain cancer. But the runners in this 5K say the fight goes on with Lauren still leading the way.
"It’s amazing, to know that she isn’t forgotten and that she has made a difference and inspired people to be their best, and I think that’s her legacy. She keeps propelling people forward. Its amazing."
The courageous battle of the Lawrenceburg and Mount St. Joseph basketball player against a debilitating brain tumor was on the minds of many runners pounding the pavement of this challenging course.
"It kinda gives you that never give up mentality when you are going up a really steep hill."
This run now supports the foundation and the fight for the cure. Lauren’s mother Lisa Hill and father Bret have become ambassadors for the many others in the fight against DIPG and brain tumors.
Lawrenceburg Mayor Kelly Mollaun says it is here in her hometown where her beacon seems to shine brightest.
"You come over the hill and you see the football field and they had it lit up, it was just a sight. It’s a great honor to her," Mollaun said.
Though her lifetime was short, her journey covered many miles.
"It’s amazing that you had some young adult, 18, and here she inspired not just Lawrenceburg, the entire city and nation, and I think she would be really proud."
