JEFFERSONVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) — A man is facing drug and child abuse charges after police say he overdose on heroin inside a store while pushing an infant in stroller.

Authorities say 36-year-old Eddie Ray Johnson was pushing a 3-month-old in a stroller inside a Dollar Store in Jeffersonville when bystanders called police saying he had passed out.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, witnesses said they intervened when Johnson pushed the infant outside and tried to remove the child from the seat. At that point, according to an arrest citation, Johnson "collapsed on the sidewalk/parking lot and was turning blue."

Johnson allegedly told one of the witnesses that he had taken heroin.

The child’s mother was located inside the store. The woman told police she did not know Johnson was using heroin.

Johnson was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

He is charged with second-degree wanton endangerment and abuse or neglect of a child.

Johnson is being held in the Montgomery County Detention Center.
