SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– Someone came across a decades-old military grave marker in Scott County, but it wasn’t where it was supposed to be.

The plaque was discovered on the side of Davis Road near the Scott-Harrison county line.

It’s that of a WWI veteran by the name of Howard Black.

The man who found it contacted the sheriff’s department and now through Facebook, and other means, they’re trying to track down family to get the marker back where it belongs.

"We have several members of our agency that are prior military, or current military, national guard, that kind of thing — including myself," said Captain Jearl Porter of the Scott County Sheriff’s Department. "So that makes it a  big deal. Someone who has served our country and received that recognition, it needs to be in its proper place."

If you have any information that can help track down family and get the grave marker home, contact the sheriff’s office.
