LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– The Lexington Police Department honored more than 70 people at their annual awards ceremony Tuesday night.

Dozens of officers gathered at the Lexington Convention Center to be honored for acts of valor and service.

But the department also honored some who don’t wear an LPD badge, like Transylvania University Police Chief Gregg Muravchick.

He was part of the team who stopped a machete-welding man from attacking students in a campus cafe in April of 2017.

"We went in and we were very fortunate that during the course of the action he complied and we were able to apprehend him," Muravchick said.

Another person honored at the banquet was 13-year-old Amaya Catching, who was awarded the department’s Courage Medal.

In June 2017, she was shot in the back in a drive-by shooting during her birthday sleepover.

Now she uses a wheelchair, but that doesn’t stop her from living a normal life.
