LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) The film ‘American Animals’ is finally in theaters. It is based on the story of four Transylvania University students who tased and tied up the school librarian and stole priceless pieces from the library. They were arrested when they tried to sell the items at an auction.

"A friend of mine who I went to church with, she was also working in the library at that time," said moviegoer Bryan Barrett.

Sam and Lindsey Williamson met at film school in Nashville. Years ago, the couple moved back to Lexington, having no idea that when they started their production company, they’d be hired to work on the film, which documents the heist.

"Have really had some interesting projects since we’ve come back, but this is by far the most interesting," said Sam Williamson.

"They inter-cut between the actors talking… and the real guys finishing those sentences," said Lindsey Williamson.

The real guys tell the real story on the silver screen and it all happened right here in Lexington.

The movie premiered nationwide Friday. There will also be a Lexington premiere at Kentucky theatre starting at 7:30 p.m. with a second showing at 9:40 p.m.
