LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) – More than 1,000 homeless men have a bed and a roof over their head every night at the Hope Center in Lexington, but as summer kicks off, the charity said the need for donations is greater than ever.

Soap, shampoo, deodorant, and razors are some of the items they hand out daily. The supply is often short though.

The Hope Center often uses the Facebook community to replenish when they run out of supplies. Recently, they put out a plea for hot weather items and first-aid items.

Less than an hour after they put out the plea, $500 worth of Band-Aids, rubbing alcohol, Neosporin, and sunscreen arrived courtesy of Father Jim Sichko.

"What people don’t realize is that hot weather is just as unbearable for the homeless as very, very cold weather. And our two highest volume days last year were the two hottest days in the middle of the summer. So this is a time of year when we see an enormous amount of clients and we do run through those items very quickly," said Carey Cairo, a Hope Center volunteer and Community Engagement Manager.
