LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)–  A man is behind bars after dispatchers overheard a domestic dispute from an open cellphone line.

It happened around 11:38 p.m. Monday off White Oak Road, approximately eight miles west of London.

Deputies were dispatched to a complaint received through dispatch. Dispatchers advised someone had called 911 from a cell phone and the line was open, and they could hear a heated domestic dispute between a male and female subject. At one point, the male allegedly threatened to kill the female and cut her tongue out.

The dispatch center was able to ping the cell phone developing a location on the suspect vehicle. Deputies located the vehicle and attempted to conducted a traffic stop. The vehicle initially fled, but later stopped.

Upon investigation, deputies say they learned that 43-year-old Shawn Kurt Mulrenin had allegedly struck the female in the head several times and drove off while she was attempting to exit the vehicle. Deputies also found the driver in possession of a pipe used to smoke meth.

Mulrenin was charged with fourth-degree assault, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, second-degree fleeing or evading police, possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree wanton endangerment, and failure of the owner to maintain required insurance.

He was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
