RICHMOND, Ky. (LEX 18) – Residents on Simpson Lane in Madison County called 911 at noon Wednesday to report orange water in Galloway Creek.

Madison County Fire Department and Madison County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) responded and arrived at the spill site at Estill Wood Products on Igo Road. Madison County EMA contacted Kentucky Emergency Management and the Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) who will oversee mitigation of the spill.

An undetermined amount of dye used to color mulch entered the creek which flows to Smith’s Fork creek. The dye can be dangerous to aquatic life. The Kentucky ERT is responding to the spill and has taken samples of the water. There have been no signs of stress to aquatic life. An environmental contractor is working with Estill Wood Products to clean up the spill site. The Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection’s Emergency Response Team will continue to monitor the site.
