COVINGTON, Ky. (WLWT) — A Covington Police K9 officer is recovering after being hit by an alleged drunken driver.
WLWT reports here that the crash happened about 3:30 a.m. Saturday on Interstate Highway 75/71.
Police say 50-year-old Asfaw Kassahun was driving impaired at the time of the crash.
Covington police K9 Officer Ernie was hit and taken to the hospital.
Kenton County prosecutor Rob Sanders tweeted Saturday about Ernie’s progress.

Kassahun was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree assault on a service animal and failure to issue insurance cars. He was being held in the Kenton County Detention Center.
