SEATTLE, Wash. (LEX 18)– A Georgetown athlete has won a gold medal on the opening day of competition at the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, Washington.

Barts won his heat of the 100-meter dash in a time of :13.19. It was the second USA Games 100-meter medal for Barts, who won silver in the event at the 2019 Games in Lincoln, Neb. The medal-winning effort was the second run of the day for Barts.

He was selected to compete in the first High Performance 100-meter dash in Special Olympics history. A win in the High Performance event would have given Barts the opportunity to qualify for the 2019 World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi. Barts did not advance to the High Performance final, but cruised to victory in his traditional heat.

Barts will have Tuesday off before competing in the long jump and the 400-meters Wednesday.
