FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18)– Deputies spent hours outside of a home in Frankfort in the search for a murder suspect. Sadly, they did not find who they were there for.

Sheriff Pat Melton believes they are close to catching Derek Garten, a suspect in the murderof 39-year-old Margaret Elizabeth Smith earlier this week.

They know Garten was in the home, but he managed to get away. Officers needed those 7 hours to officially clear the scene. He has since shaved his head from Tuesday when he was first labeled a person of interest in the shooting death of Margaret Smith.  Sheriff Pat Melton said a female friend of Garten’s lives in the home he was hiding out inside.

Crews surrounded the home for hours and though someone eventually came out of the home and was taken into custody, Sheriff Pat Melton says that it was not Garten in the home.

If you see Garten or have information on his whereabouts, call 911 immediately.
