PRESTONSBURG, Ky (EKB) — The man accused of striking and killing a pedestrian and leaving the scene entered a not guilty plea in court Thursday.

Kyle Collins, 23, of Berea, is accused of failing to stop after hitting 60-year-old Larry Hinkle in the Teaberry community of Floyd County on July 1, 2017. Hinkle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Just over a year after Hinkle’s death, Judge Johnny Ray Harris accepted Collins’ not guilty plea and held him without bond.

After the hearing, emotions were running high for both families. Outside the courtroom, a confrontation occurred and the Collins’ party was made to remain in the Justice Center until the Hinkle family had exited.

A bond hearing is set for Tuesday and Collins’ trial is set for September.
