(LEX 18) — While Attorney General Andy Beshear is the first to officially throw his hat into the ring in the 2019 race for governor, several others are expected to follow.

LEX 18 political analyst Bob Babbage is offering some thoughts on what to expect ahead of the November 2019 vote.

Now that Beshear is in, Babbage says there are several people to keep your eyes on in the days ahead.

"The consensus is that Rocky Adkins, a longtime legislator and Democratic leader, is seriously considering this. Adam Edelen, former state auditor, is considering. A legislator in Louisville who would be the first minority candidate for governor in recent memory, Attica Scott, indicated last week that she’s thinking about it," Babbage said.

He said Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes also could make a strong run for governor — or she might run for attorney general now that Beshear looks to vacate that seat.

The other large and looming question is whether one of these Democratic contenders will face off against Gov. Matt Bevin or someone else.

"For Bevin, it would be likely that he could be the only candidate or only viable candidate for the Republican side, if he chooses to run," Babbage said. "There’s probably a stampede if he doesn’t."

So far, Bevin has remained tight-lipped about his plans.
