CARTER COUNTY, Ky. (WAVE 3)– A man is facing more than 500 counts of cruelty to animals.

Last week, officials removed 25 dogs, 16 cats and 11 opossums from inside Kevin McCaffery’s mobile home. They also removed animals living outside.

Animal control says the animals didn’t have adequate food, water, or basic care.

A llama and a goat were reportedly in such bad shape, they had to be put down.

But McCaffery says his purpose on earth is to be a caretaker to god’s animals.

"I bleach their kennels and wash their rugs and blankets," McCaffery said. "Every day I do three loads of laundry to make sure my dogs are in a clean and well kept environment."

Mccaffery was arraigned Monday on 560 charges of first-degree cruelty to animals, 11 charges of propagation and holding protected wildlife, and three charges of second-degree cruelty to animals.
