LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A thief who was looking to clean up at a Lexington laundromat got away empty-handed, and now police are hoping to catch him before he strikes again. On June 26, Lexington Police say, a man was caught on surveillance video throwing a rock through the front door of the Laundry Connection on Newtown Pike and then making a bee-line for a change machine."We believe he knew in advance this was his target, but what he didn’t realize is this has these folding plate metal pieces that they can fold down at night to secure the machine," said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department. After a few seconds of struggling, the thief gave up, leaving empty-handed. He left behind quite a mess. "When he threw that rock through this plate glass window, he caused $1,000 of damage, in efforts of maybe getting $20 in quarters," said Thomas.Lexington Police believe that this may have been the man’s first real attempt at burglary, given that he made no real effort to hide his face or dodge security cameras.Investigators believe that this man has probably been seen around the laundromat before. "We’d rather identify this guy and see if we can get him some kind of treatment and some help, possibly for an addiction, before this escalates any further," said Thomas.
