Unconscious Driver Reportedly Takes Off, Crashes After Waking Up

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– A man is facing numerous charges following an accident near the University of Kentucky’s campus. 

It happened around 4:51 p.m. Friday on Winslow Street at South Upper Street.

Police say a witness flagged down an officer about a man passed out in the driver’s seat of a stopped vehicle.

According to the arrest citation, the officer attempted to wake up the subject by knocking on the window. When that didn’t work, the officer used an object to attempt to break the window. 

During the process, the subject reportedly woke up and and sped off through a red light on South Upper Street, the roundabout garden, construction fences, and finally crashed into a structure pillar. 

UK police then arrested the driver, 21-year-old Joshua William Cook and found drugs on him and in his vehicle. 

Cook was taken the ER and then lodged in the Fayette County Detention Center.

He is facing numerous charges, including first-degree wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police, first-degree possession of a controlled substance.
