JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – Runners in Nicholasville laced up on Saturday morning to support a little girl in her fight against cancer.

More than 300 people showed up for the second annual 5K for Amaya J.

5-year-old Amaya Jones was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2015.

She finished her final dose of chemo in February, but still has to go to the doctor every month for the next 5 years for follow-ups.

Friends started the race last year to help the Jones family with Amaya’s medical bills. The family says they’re overwhelmed by the support from all over.

“You meet people. There were two people who came from different states. One from Indiana and one from Mississippi. They came because they heard about the cause through their family, and were like we will come down that weekend and do it all as a family,” said Lori Jones, Amaya’s mother.

The event raised $15,000 to continue helping the family with expenses.

The family says they’ll also donate to Make-A-Wish and Dance Blue patient assistant services.
