LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– It’s becoming a weekly occurence across Lexington neighborhoods and shopping centers, car burglaries leading to fraudulent credit card purchases.

Only this time, the person of interest found a new way in.

Police are looking for the suspect who allegedly broke into a vehicle and stole credit cards, while the other suspects then went on a shopping spree at multiple Lexington locations.

The victim did exactly what police urge all of us to do, leave the valuables in the trunk if you’re not taking them with you. But that didn’t matter this time. Everything was in the trunk, but the person of interest knew where to locate the ‘trunk release’ in quick fashion.

"This is the most common crime you’ll find in any city, anywhere," Detective Mark Thomas. "Like I said there’s no neighborhood anywhere where you’re safe.  You could live in a gated community, in fact when I was in college I live in a place called Opera House Square off Short Street, right beside the opera house, gated community actually had brick walls, and we had our cars broken into all the time."

Detective Thomas added that the person of interest on the surveillance video is likely a veteran of these types of crimes given he knew exactly what to go for when he committed this crime.

Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to an arrest. Call the tipline at 859-253-2020.
