LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – The family of a University of Kentucky student who passed away while in Tel Aviv, Israel has announced they will raise money for a scholarship fund in her honor.

Teniya Jones, a sophomore at UK, had spent her summer studying in Amman, Jordan.  She and two of her classmates had decided to visit Tel Aviv before flying back home.

According to officials, Jones and her friends went swimming in the Mediterranean after midnight. They became trapped in a riptide. Her friends were able to make it to shore but Jones disappeared.

The students called Israeli officials who initiated a major search and rescue effort. On Monday, Jones was found deceased on the beach in Tel Aviv.

Teniya was studying Arabic and was a talented high school track star. Her family hopes to continue her legacy by creating a scholarship for graduating seniors.
