GARRARD COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) A four-legged officer in Garrard County needs your help to stay safe and cool.

The Garrard County Police Department is raising money to outfit one of their K-9 officers with all the proper gear so that he can continue to serve and protect. K9 Ranger is a very good dog. He is serious about his job and he is good at it too.

The two-year-old German Shepherd has become an indispensable asset in both drug investigations and search and rescue operations.

"Within a week he was already assisting in drug arrests, so we’ve been very pleased with Ranger," said Garrard County Judge-Executive John Wilson.

Wilson said that it is imperative to keep Ranger safe, just like any other officer on the force.

"A lot of times when the dog is deployed it’s because things have gone wrong. So if a suspect is fleeing and the dog goes after him you know you’re not going to outrun the dog," he said.

The police department is in need of a protective vest for Ranger, as well as a door pop system that would allow Ranger to come to his partner’s aid at the push of a button and keep him safe if the car becomes too hot.

"In the event that the temperature in the cage, in the car goes up, it’ll roll down the windows and turn the lights and sirens on," said Wilson.

The total cost for these items is around $2,200, which is a lot of money for a department the size of Garrard County.

They’re hopeful that people will donate to ensure that Ranger will stay safe and on the force for years to come.

You can donate here, or donate on PayPall by sending the money to garrardjudge@windsteam.net and specify the payment is for K9.
