LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – With school right around the corner, the YMCA along with Fayette County Schools held city-wide rallies to get kids and their parents ready for the new year.

The rallies took place in seventeen neighborhoods across Lexington and provided more than 6,000 elementary, middle and high school kids with free backpacks and school supplies.

A press conference was held at Douglas Park on Saturday morning to kick off the event, along with a special performance by local performer Devine Carama.

“To see the community that’s wrapping their arms around kids, because it does take a village. It takes a village to make all of our kids successful and so it’s nice to see the smiling faces, not just from family and kids, but from school staff,” said Jessica Berry, Vice President of Youth Development with the YMCA of Central Kentucky.

Nearly 48,000 students have been served since this initiative started in 2011.
