LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a check-cashing mail scam.

According to Sheriff John Root, residents receive a check in the mail which instructs them to deposit the money into their account. Afterward, the victim is asked to send money from the deposited check to an address via a cashier’s check, green dot card, MoneyGram or a personal check.

Unfortunately, the original check is not legitimate and will leave the victim dealing with fees.

The sheriff is asking residents to be cautious and to never send money, checks or other means of cash to individuals they don’t know. The sheriff’s office says they are investigating numerous complaints.
