BREATHITT COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– An abandoned building went up in flames Thursday morning, affecting a nearby church.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. on Armory Drive in Jackson.

Fire official tell us the fire is 80 to 90 percent contained, but hot spots remain and because of that, so will they.

There are no injuries and the main damage is to two abandoned buildings. Those will be a total loss.

The church which shares a wall with the buildings. It sustained significant water damage, as it had to be sprayed to prevent from igniting.

"When crews arrived they noticed fire in two separate locations in the building," said Stephen Bowling of the Jackson Fire Department. "Immediately went into suppression effort. Unfortunately we were unable to save the initial building where the fire was. And it eventually spread into two additional buildings."

The church pastor’s son told LEX 18, several of the 40-50 members of their church helped remove valuables, including bibles.
