MARSHALL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– Marshall County students will head back to school Thursday, less than seven months after a deadly mass shooting at the high school.

This year, several new safety measures have been put into place in hopes of preventing anything like that from happening again.

  • Backpacks are banned for middle and high schoolers
  • There are size restrictions on purses and laptop bags
  • Middle and high school students will walk through metal detectors

For Andrew Coleman, a senior at Marshall County High School, the changes represent a new reality.

"Still to this day, I always think about it. It just doesn’t seem like that would ever happen to a town like this. It’s just hard to believe that something like that would happen but…"

The district also has five resource officers now. One will be stationed at each middle school. Two will be at the high school, and another will float between the high school and elementary schools.
