PINE KNOT, Ky. (AP) – Authorities say a Kentucky federal prison inmate who started a 15-month sentence two weeks ago has died.

The U.S. Department of Justice tells the Lexington Herald-Leader in a statement 55-year-old John Arthur died Monday after suffering life-threatening injuries. The Pulaski County native had been found unresponsive at the U.S. Penitentiary in McCreary County and died roughly an hour later at a hospital.

The statement says the prison will investigate Arthur’s death. It didn’t say how he was injured.

Arthur’s sentence for disability fraud began July 30 after he pleaded guilty in June. He applied for disability benefits in 2005, claiming he was blind and unable to work. He had surgery that improved his eyesight, but still received government disability checks for nearly 10 years while he was able to work.
