WINCHESTER, Ky. (LEX 18) — A massive blaze overnight destroyed a barn in Clark County that was used by a horse farm.

Flames continued to light up the area Sunday morning hours after the fire broke out at the barn, which was used by Dragonsmeade, a Morgan horse farm in Winchester.

Fire officials say calls alerting them to the fire came in about 3 a.m.

By the time fire fighters arrived on the scene, the barn was engulfed in flames and the roof already had collapsed.

"We’re getting water from a pond, we’re getting water from down the road and water tankers, so we have a pretty effective operation going on here," said Ernest Barnes of the Clark County Fire Department. "It’s just a shame that these people have this loss

The flames were so powerful, they were threatening nearby trees.

The barn had 20 stalls, and the fire chief says some farming equipment was stored inside.

LEX 18 is told there were horses inside the barn with the fire broke out, but it’s unclear how many animals were there or their fate.

The cause of the fire was not immediately disclosed.
