LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) It only took a few seconds for a man to get away with a ring valued at more than $5,000.

"When the salesperson walked away to check on the price to possibly negotiate with him, he takes the ring and runs out of the store," said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department.

Thomas said that the ring the man ran out with won’t be worth nearly as much outside of the store as it was in.

"You’d think that should be simple, it’s a diamond ring. but he can’t take this to a pawn shop. This is not something he’s going to want to take to a pawn shop, because these jewelry stores and pawn shops communicate," said Thomas.

Lead detectives believe that the man had stolen the ring to see to someone he already ha lined up, or he was stealing it as a gift for someone.

"Occasionally too, we’ll get informants that come forward and they’ll say, ‘Hey you might want to look into this guy because he’s showing up with things we think could be stolen’," said Thomas.
