NELSON COUNTY, Ky (WAVE 3) On Sunday, a group of American Legion riders joined a Bardstown woman as she delivered a memorial flag to a veteran’s family in Petersburg, Indiana.

Katie Marks found the flag at a Peddler’s Mall in Bardstown, Kentucky. She bought it for $45 and decided she was going to return it. After a bit of research, Marks learned that the veteran Samual A. Steward’s family lived in Indiana, three hours from where the flag was for sale.

The American Legion riders joined her.

"It was a no-brainer. I said yes for the whole bunch and told everybody we were going to do it," said Dale McKinney, a member of American Legion Post 157.

The caravan ended at the veteran’s nephew’s home who explained that after his wife delivered their stillborn baby earlier this year, the medical bills kept coming, leaving the family with no choice but to stop paying on their storage unit, losing everything inside, including his uncle’s flag.

Marks says she hopes others hear this story and respect our veterans.
