GEORGETOWN, Ky. (LEX 18) — A shootout overnight at Scott County rest area left a suspect dead and a deputy wounded, officials said.

Authorities said the altercation happened just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the rest stop on Interstate Highway 75 near mile marker 127.

Officials said the Scott County Sheriff’s deputy was responding to a complaint about a person at the rest stop. When the deputy arrived, he became engaged in a shootout.

28-year-old Jaime Morales has been identified as the deputy who was shot. The sheriff says he received one gunshot wound. Morales is a former corporal in the United States Marines.

The suspect was later identified as 57-year-old Edward Reynolds of Florida. Reynolds was killed in the exchange. Federal agents say Reynolds was wanted in connection with the armed robbery of a BB&T Bank in Sarasota on July 25.
