LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – Saturday a special tailgate and fundraiser was held in memory of the 4-year-old who was hit and killed two weeks ago outside of the UK football game.

In the two weeks since Marco Shemwell died, family members, friends and people across Kentucky have been coming together to support his family.

Burgers and hot dogs were on the grill in the parking lot at the Kroger on Euclid Avenue from 1:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. on Saturday.

Baked goods were also for sale, and monetary donations were being accepted on behalf of the Shemwell family.

“It makes me feel like we’re all in this together even if we don’t know each other, we know that we all have each other’s back,” said Addison Maynard.

Maynard is a family friend of the Shemwell’s. It’s still hard for her to deal with Shemwell’s death. But she says fundraisers like this are so important.

“Just show how much I love them and how much I’ll be there for them through anything,” said Maynard.

All the money raised at the event will go to the family.

Friends of the family are also encouraging people to sign up to become an organ donor. Marco was able to save lives with his donations.
