LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – The Lexington Fire Department kicked off Fire Prevention Month a day early with their annual fire prevention and wellness festival held on Sunday.

Whether it’s a trip down memory lane in an old fashioned fire truck, or a modern example of just how fast fires spread, the festival has something for everyone.

Firefighters say while the annual event is about fun and education, it’s also about building relationships with the community.

“It allows us to show that we’re human just like they are. That we have families, that we enjoy kids that we enjoy being a part of their safety and their life and their community and we love giving back,” said Lexington Fire Department Major Jordan Saas.

Saas said a big thing they tried to stress to people is the importance of having working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
