MOUNT HEALTHY, Oh. (WLWT) – An investigation is underway after a shooting Friday in Mount Healthy left a little girl dead.

“A gunshot wound to a 3-year-old that results in death will always spark a criminal investigation,” Sgt. Greg Nolte said.

Authorities were called to a location on Clovernook Avenue sometime before 5 p.m. for a report of a shooting.

Community advocate Rev. Peterson Mingo said his son was in the neighborhood visiting. People ran to his car screaming for help. His son called 911 and attempted to perform CPR.

“They showed him where the baby was (and) he tried to do something,” Mingo said.

WLWT listened to the 911 call. You can hear Mingo’s son frantically attempting to follow the orders of the 911 operator to help the child.

Mingo said when he spoke to his son, he was obviously shaken by the ordeal but appeared to be doing okay. Mingo also said he was told the child got her hands on a gun that was in a holster in a bedroom.

The name of the child has not been released, nor has the name of the gun owner. Although some on scene said it was a tragic accident, police would only describe it as a criminal investigation.

“It’s extremely tragic for something like this to happen and it makes you want to spend more time with your kids and really cherish your moment because something like this can happen just like that, and that’s how it happened,” Mingo said.

So far, no charges have been filed.
