CORAL SPRINGS, Fl. (NBC NEWS) – A controversial confrontation in Coral Springs, Florida  involved police and a 14-year-old girl.

The family’s attorney said that, based on the video, her client was hit repeatedly while on the ground with her hands under her belly and while the officer’s knee was on the teenager.

Previously, the 14-year-old was seen pushing another teen at a Florida mall and told not to return, according to authorities, WSVN-TV reported.

The incident at Coral Square Mall involved security asking police officers to issue a trespass warning and ban the teens from the mall, which they did, according to a statement from police.

But the 14-year-old returned to the mall and allegedly tried to incite teens and fought back when police attempted to take her into custody, WFOR-TV reported.

Police said the video only shows part of the story. Police said the girl was struck in the side as officers tried to get her to release her clenched fists.

The girl’s mother, Jessica Dennis, told WSVN-TV that watching the video is heartbreaking.
