LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – One of the busiest travel weeks of the year kicks off this week, and AAA predicts 54 million Americans will travel for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanksgiving is all about family.

“I’m just mostly looking forward to not having to cook and having my mom’s food,” said Luke Bakewell.

Bakewell says he can’t wait to get home even if he has to battle large crowds at the airport.

AAA warns that certain times will be especially busy and you may want to avoid them.

The busiest days at the airport will be Tuesday and Wednesday. You’ll want to leave extra early and prepare for a crowd if you’re going to be flying, or picking up or dropping someone off.

“I’ve traveled for the holidays multiple times and it’s always interesting,” said Laurie Preston.

Preston says this year she’s staying home in Lexington, but that means family is traveling to her.

“We have people coming in from canada, we have detroit, florida. they’re kind of coming from all over,” said Preston.

So she’ll be keeping tabs on everyone to make sure their trip goes smoothly. AAA recommends drivers allow for extra time to reach their destination, there will especially be traffic on the roads on Wednesday.
