KALAMAZOO, Mi. (WWMT via CNN) – Samuel VerHage’s mission to help the homeless began with 200 blankets.

Four years since his first effort to hand out blankets to those in need, the Kalamazoo, Michigan, 12-year-old was able to provide more than 2,500 blankets.

“It’s helping the homeless and I’ve always had a heart for the homeless,” VerHage told WWMT-TV.

He offered the blankets on Friday as part of his Samuel’s Blankets effort.

“Being so young, he has a beautiful heart. To help people out here who (don’t) have much, it’s really wonderful,” said Jasmine Morton, who, along with her two nieces, received blankets.

VerHage works throughout the year to prepare for his growing endeavor.

“When I have people that come and want to shake his hand or give him a hug, that is wonderful. I get tears so many times when that happens,” his mother, Denise VerHage, said.
