In the Woodland Triangle area, businesses kicked off their “Holiday Shop Hop” on Friday.
If shoppers buy an item from all of the participating businesses in the area by the middle of December, they can enter into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate.
Business owners say initiatives like this help strengthen their relationships with customers.
Small Business Saturday started in 2010 as a way to encourage people to support local retailers who provide jobs and put money back into the community.
According to American Express, since its inception, Americans have spent about $85 billion at local businesses on this holiday.
