LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – University of Kentucky students are thrilled to see their school play on New Year’s Day, and they’re grateful to have witnessed the school’s best football season in decades.

Students say games at Kroger Field have been a lot of fun this season, and now they’re ready for a trip to Orlando to see their Cats take on Penn State on a big stage.

“We’ve had a lot of ups and downs for this season, but more ups than downs, so I think with such a prestigious bowl that we’re going to, it’s going to inspire them and we’re going to have a really high shot of winning,” said student Joe Newcomb.

Newcomb says he’s waited a long time for a season like this.

“I’ve been going to games since I was seven years old so it’s finally cool to see a team be so successful after so much of their hard work,” said Newcomb.

He says this season has already exceeded his expectations.

“It was right around when we beat Florida that I was like OK this team is something to talk about and then we just kept winning and kept winning,” said Newcomb.

Now he’s just got to find a way to get to Orlando.

“I’m going to try with all my effort to go to that game,” said Newcomb.

UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart says he wants to see fans paint the town blue in Orlando.
