CLINTON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — A man accused of fatally slashing the throat of his 3-year-old niece was in court Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and wanton endangerment.

Authorities accuse Emanuel Flutur of attacking the girl Saturday in the a bedroom of a home in Albany. Police say Josephine Bulubenchi was mortally wounded in the attack, which was disrupted when the child’s father heard screams over a baby monitor and intervened.

Josephine died days later at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where she’d been airlifted for treatment.

Authorities say Flutur was living with his sister’s family when he went into a bedroom where several children were sleeping and attacked Josephine.

An older brother of Flutur’s attended Tuesday’s arraignment and said Flutur has suffered mental illness for years but never harmed anyone but himself. He said his family is heartbroken for his niece and for Flutur.

“It was pretty much he was separated from reality, but he did realize what he did,” said Dariu Flutur. “I know he is sorry for what he did. I know he is.”
