LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – The man who pleaded guilty to entering a Transylvania University cafe wielding a machete has been sentenced to prison time.

Mitchell Adkins entered a guilty plea on Nov. 2 to ten counts, including one count of second-degree assault, one count of fourth-degree assault, four counts of terroristic threatening, one count of resisting arrest, and three counts of menacing.

The attack occurred in April of 2017.

Adkins entered Jazzmans Cafe and began asking people about their political affiliation. He then attacked two students with a machete, sending one to UK Hospital.

In an online rant entitled “Discrimination of Conservatives in Liberal Arts,”  Adkins complained that he felt attacked for his conservative views at the university. He allowed a Republican student to walk away but attacked two girls who said they were Democrats.

Adkins has been sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison. He has served 68 days.

In court, he apologized for the attack.
