MONROE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – Kentucky State Police troopers are reporting that a body found in Monroe County has been identified as a teen who went missing when her car was swept away by floodwaters.

KSP reports that 19-year-old Leah Carter called 911 just before 7:00p.m. on New Year’s Eve and told dispatchers that her car was being swept away by floodwaters. Reportedly the teen said she had tried to cross a flooded bridge on Lyons Road in Monroe County when her car stalled out.

First responders rushed to the area but they were unable to find Carter or her car that night. KSP troopers say her car was found in the morning about 500 yards downstream from the flooded bridge, but Carter was nowhere to be found.

Search and rescue efforts continued throughout the week.

KSP is reporting that Carter’s body was found  on Saturday on a riverbank about 5 miles from where her car had been swept away.
