LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – At just 25-years-old, Gary Medlin was trying to run for safety during a robbery at a Knox County convenience store when he was shot and killed.

Now 24-year-old Phillip Lee Lewis is behind bars, charged with his murder.

Casey Dalton works with Medlin’s step father at Glenn’s Freedom Dodge in Lexington.

She says an arrest in the case brings some peace to Medlin’s family, but with his two young kids left without a father, there is still so much pain.

“That just breaks my heart and I couldn’t imagine the grief that they’re feeling,” said Dalton.

While Dalton never met Medlin, she says as a mother his death hits home.

“To think if something were to happen to me or my husband and my sons left without us. They’re never going to go to high school graduation and have their dad there, or play baseball or get married,” said Dalton.

She started a Gofundme page to raise money for Medlin’s two sons. She says he didn’t have life insurance, so any little bit helps.

“We really do care about the people that work here. Anytime there’s someone in a crisis or in need I feel like we all come together and try to pull for that person,” said Dalton.
