JACKSON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Kentucky State Police and Jackson County Coroner’s officials were investigating Saturday after an elderly woman was found dead following a fire near Sand Gap.

Multiple fire departments fought the blaze, which broke out around 4:45 a.m. Saturday morning at a home along U.S. Highway 421.

The structure appeared to be a total loss, as small flames and smoke continued to rise from the rubble late Saturday afternoon.

KSP public affairs spokeman Trooper Robert Purdy said the woman’s body was found in the wreckage.

“As a result of the ongoing investigation, the deceased is being taken to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy,” Purdy said. “There does not appear to be anything suspicious about the fire.”

The Jackson County coroner later identified the victim as 91-year-old Leah Jean Morris.
