LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – American Red Cross volunteers spent the day installing more than 100 free smoke detectors around Lexington.

It’s part of their ‘sound the alarm, save a life program’.

The volunteers installed the alarms for families in need. They also shared fire safety tips with people.

Organizers say this kind of outreach really works.

“It is about saving lives, that is our main purpose is making homes safer, saving lives,” said Red Cross volunteer Melissa McGill.

“We kind of go over fire hazards in their home if we see them while we’re there. we also give them a littl education on what to do in case of an emergency,” said McGill.

Red cross volunteers will do the same thing in Cynthiana on Monday.
