(LEX 18)– Health officials are investigating an outbreak of salmonella infections linked to contact with backyard poultry.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that 52 people have been infected with the outbreak.

Strains of salmonella have been reported from 21 states, including in Kentucky.

Officials say five people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.

Research shows that nearly 30 percent of ill people were children younger than 5-years-old.

The CDC has released a guide on how you can get salmonella from poultry and how to keep yourself safe.
