LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — A 14-year-old boy has serious injuries after he was shot in the head and chest on Willie Cheek Road Tuesday evening, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.

The boy was looking at a shotgun with another teen, Deputy Gilbert Acciardo said, when it fired.

He was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he is expected to survive, Acciardo said.

“Something like this, which is devastating, can happen to anyone if we don’t follow certain safety rules,” he said.

“We always stress, number one, that you don’t play with a gun,” Acciardo said. “Number two, that you always treat the gun as if it is loaded, and you never, ever, point it at someone.”

The boy’s sister, Penny Wagers, said her brother has a long road to recovery ahead.

“This is something that you never think would happen to you,” she said. “I just ask for prayers and continued support for his recovery.”
