OWEN COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – A woman was killed and a man was arrested following an ATV crash in Owen County.

KSP officials say that troopers were called to the crash on Old Landing Road in the Monterey community just after 4:30 on Friday afternoon.

Reportedly the passenger, 73-year-old Patricia Karsner, was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital where she died a couple of hours later.

An Owen County deputy responding to the accident spoke with the driver of the ATV, and determined he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Mario Chavez-Canela, 43, of Monterey, KY, was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs/Etc. 2nd Offense and Assault 2nd Degree.

There’s no word on whether his charges could be upgraded as a result of Karsner’s death.

LEX 18 reported in 2016 that Chavez-Canela worked as a court security officer for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, but was fired after being arrested on a DUI charge in Shelby County.

The State Journal reports that Chavez-Canela got his job back earlier this year under new Sheriff Chris Quire and is currently employed by the department in the courthouse security division. LEX 18 has been unable to get in touch with Sheriff Quire.

Kentucky State Police troopers are investigating the crash.
