LYON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Officials have released more information about a deadly 12-vehicle pileup on a western Kentucky highway.

Authorities said 19-year-old Jace Smothers was killed Friday when the van he was riding in was struck from behind by a semi-tractor trailer.

A Kansas native, Smothers had just completed his freshman year at Ozark Christian College.

The school released a statement saying Smothers was travelling with a youth ministry organization when the crash happened.

Kentucky State Police said they believe inattention by the semi driver contributed to the crash, which involved 11 other vehicles and injured 22 other people.
